It’s May: Let’s talk shop!

Hello May!

May is a memorable month for me for many things, one of those is that two (2) years ago on May 20th 2015 I decided to open my etsy shop. Aaaahhhhhhhhhhh!!!! http://www.etsy.com/shop/amshinaapparel

With the encouragement of my friends and family I took a leap of faith and started my own handmade sewing business. While it didn’t officially became a business until January 2016, the quest started that May 20th, 2015.

Let’s be real, business was never a part of my plans and I am very much working out those lovely details that make entrepreneurship a journey. 🙂

I am learning daily as an entrepreneur. I am super blessed and grateful to be artistic but also administrative, phew!!….working on the business management part, is not that easy when you are the manager for everything and the manufacturer! 🙂 Every now and then I question things and get hard on myself for the things I don’t know. I guess that’s natural.

Thank God for books, blogs and videos. I greatly appreciate those that have gone before me and those that have been doing this for years that generously share their work. Learning has been a blessing. I try to engage in learning something new about my sewing and running a business every month. Whether it’s to get a new book, find a new blog to read or try a new technique.

The first year was trial and error, a combination of many ‘why questions’ and me being really scared as I entered this unchartered territory. If there was ever a moment in my life that I felt I was an imposter, this sure was that moment.” Oh my, why am I sewing for others? Can I really do this”, “I didn’t study fashion?, ” I am a project manager? These were some of my road block questions. I still wrestle with them at times but I don’t camp with those thoughts too long for it to hinder my next step. I realize early on that answering these very questions would determine everything.  They would determine my “keep going factor”.

The keep going factor

There is a friend of mine who doesn’t know how big an encouragement her words are to me. She always says, “I don’t know how you do it but you keep going it”. The “keep going factor” is my mantra indeed.  I know I am not a quitter so even when I make mistakes I believe if I keep doing it long enough I will get it right. Think about it this way, it’s only when we reach a road block that we question how far we have come and contemplate turning back. For me, because I have come this far, I have no choice but to press on in hopes that the road blocks will be moved.  You see, it’s naive to think this was going to be easy; the best of the best are tested right? So who am I? Well that just means I will be tested too. The high and low points will happen in my business. Even though at times the low points seem many and the high few and far, I am happy with where I am at. I figure once I stay in the race long enough, continue to be faithful, continue to serve my clients, continue to be true to my gifts, the chances are I will finish it!

So I am staying the course everyone! 🙂 🙂 🙂 Staying in my own lane and carving out my handmade business experience the way it leads.

Thank you all for literally coming alongside me with your continued encouragement and support in different ways. The thing about races is that you need supporters, even when you are intrinsically motivated. None of this would be possible without YOU!

Stay tune this month as I highlight those key learnings in my entrepreneurial venture with my sewing.

Bless

Thinking Spring thoughts… and Sewing..!

Hi Everyone!

Belated Easter greetings. I Trust you all had an amazing time with your family or however you chose to spend it. 🙂

It’s been a world wind of activities as usual. 🙂 A little sewing there, a little sewing here, a little reading here, a lot of grad school assignments there, a little of family here and life all together there.. lol.. You guys get the wave of events. 🙂

It’s a new season though! This causes me to reflect on the way forward and where I am at. Spring brings that happy and joyful feeling  about sunshine and flowers but also possibilities. Like the budding of the trees and roses, I am feeling the possibilities. Grad school has been crazy these past months. Assignments after assignments. I sewed in between.. but not as much or how I wanted to. 😦

I finally got a chance to do some creative sewing! Yayyy!!!! I was sewing in between… so it wasn’t complete withdrawal.hahaha. You know me, I make it happen! I am more referring to the creative moments where I can be present mentally and enjoy the process of sewing and creating a beautiful piece. So over Easter I did three pieces on Good Friday! I had my own self drafted patterns already and just had a creative moment.
I thoroughly enjoyed the process but also the finished looks.

Thank you all for always being so kind and stopping by!:)  Stay tuned. I have some news of an upcoming opportunity that is happening 2 months from now! Stop by again Sunday April 23rd for more details! 🙂 My Sewing is going places!

The chronicles continue… just keep sewing, just keep sewing, what do I do I sew, sew, sewwwwwwwww!!!

Fall Winter Sewing: A little something for moi!

So this was really not the plan last evening. The goal was to go to the fabric store ( which I did), source some fabric based on some generated interest this week in a particular piece, take some pictures, head back home and work on finishing  another cardigan.

Hmmmmmmm… lets see when did it all changed.. ooh yeah… in the fabric store…lol

I saw the remnant of this fabric and had a visual of perhaps a peplum. Such an unsual print and the feel and sturdyness of the knit was just great. However when I got to the cutting table I realized that it was not going to work for a peplum that is. So I didn’t want to walk away from the piece. It is quiet and unusual print you would agree and it was on sale too…… Go figure i bought it ( A potential new member of my stash). It was less than a meter but in my head I was sure I can come up with something to do with it.

Got home and guess where I headed…. you guessed right.. the machine.. set up my thread and next few minutes I was on the floor cutting away.. Good thing was  I had a mini plan. A few weeks ago I completed an online course in designing patterns for Stretch knit fabrics through Burda Academy.. I had made most of the slopers that was done as part of the  course. The different design variations too. These slopers were all made tailored to my measurements. So eager to try out the dress sloper I made it was an easy cut for this fabric.

Used sloper to cut dress, added extra piece for length!

An hour and a half later Tadah!!!!!!!! Just like that a new member of my wardrobe!

Love how it turned out.. Had to rip the neck out and add it again because it was attached wrong…oops late night sewing.. some serger woes was included in this project but I continued. Once I tried it on I was able to hem bottom and finish the armholes.

Disregard the beautiful mess in the background.. I am working on it.. 😉 Focus on the dress…hahahah

Now back to regular programming… finishing up my holiday orders and working on new stuff.. Stop by tomorrow I have a SPECIAL PROMO running for one day only!! 🙂

Sewing: It is about risks right?

IMG_00000922_edit_edit

First attempt at Pull Strings on a Maxi skirt!!

Whether you are a beginner or an expert the risks involved in sewing any garment is evident. We cannot run from it. When you decide to look at a piece of fabric in it’s plain state and envision a finished garment that is a risk in itself. Won’t you agree?

I say risks because there is no guarantee of its perfection or completeness. Just your vision, your skill and your commitment to see it finished.

We must have heard the different stories of great Artists and Inventors that started projects and made things they never thought would have turned into anything or that were never started as masterpieces but turned out to be. You just don’t know.

Your craft is a gift, and everyday you go to that machine or hand sew a garment you are growing and adding experience to your craft. Taking the risk along signifies something to the believer; it was worth trying.

First top I ever made using a pattern bodice as a base!

So whatever stage you are at in your sewing journey, enjoy it. Bask in it, continue taking risks and challenge yourself. The very potential of your skill is realized in taking risks. How would you ever know that you could make that coat, dress, pant, hat or handbag. You must try.

A little food for thought as you are creative this week…whatever project you are holding off or delaying.. come on now.. don’t take the fun out of learning.. do it!!!

The sewing chronicles continues…

The Maternity Project!! : The sewing chronicles never stopped!

While the past month has been crazy, don’t be fooled my friends I have been busy at the sewing machine. The throws of life cannot be too much to take me away from my sewing machine. Seriously….I have the fruits of the absence in items sewed 🙂  I will share with you all over the next week. 🙂 Stay tuned.

I do apologize to my followers, friends and family for not posting as often as I would like. I really really really appreciate your continued support here on WordPress. And I will not relent but continue.

I wanted to start by sharing a special post. And the story behind it. 🙂 The maternity project!!!!!!

A friend approached me asking about making a birthing gown. I had never heard of the term before…seriously.. I didn’t know such a thing exists.

Eager and excited to deliver  the item I made a prototype. The deep purple and grey was the prototype made. She tried it and it fit perfectly. I loved how it turned out. Mimicking the hospital styled gown of the open back and jazzing it up with a ribbon and snaps for easy breast feeding, the gown in my head was an instant hit with me.

I was really impressed with the turn out and the fit. It fitted her just as the mannequin…..in fact…better..:) Since she had the real baby bump.

Once she was fitted with the prototype. I had two weeks to get the piece done. Got a great chevron print cotton in her favourite purple to add some jazz to the look.  She loved the print.

There were some glitches in completing the gown. I bought the wrong bias tape…ooh nooooo…. so stuck and disappointed that evening as I wrapped up. With no time to get the new tape I was ready to tell my friend I don’t think I would have it done for the week before her delivery. After thinking about it for a moment I figure there had to be a way to salvage this and complete it in time for delivery. It was as if I really wanted to deliver the gown in advance.

So there I was late the night before the day I would take it to her. 12 midnight, tired and weary eyed It was completed……Yesssssss…..So proud I thought I would take a few pics to share with her the next day.

IMG_5037 IMG_5045 IMG_5048 IMG_5051 IMG_5046 IMG_5071

I shared the pics with her first thing the next day……only to find out that while I worked on the dress the night before, she delivered her gorgeous baby girl!!!! awwwwwhhhhhhhh.. Congratulations my friend.. 🙂 Early delivery. I believed she still had another 6 days to the initial delivery date. Crazyyyyyyyyyyy!!!

It was a great experience for me making this. While she didn’t get to wear it for her delivery, I hope to deliver it to her to wear around the house at least. 🙂 Also I have another great project under my belt!Happy sewer moment!

🙂 The joy of sewing……

Just keep sewing, just keep sewing, what do I do I sew sew sewwwwwww!!!

God bless
