Really inspired: I am an Entrepreneur!

Happy December!

You are probably wondering what happened? Well, aside from staying on top of making and promoting holiday pieces and sharing them on my instagram, etsy shop and facebook page ( If you haven’t checked it out yet you should 🙂 ) I had my second and final speaker event of the year. I know right. Your girl is getting out in the community! Spread the word….lol hahah …okay..no..don’t..lol…alright..spread the word! 🙂

The opportunity presented itself for me to be a panelist in a women’s entrepreneurial initiative at a community organization in Toronto. I basically sat with 5 other women who are at different stages of their businesses to answer questions around being an entrepreneur. The discussion was aimed at encouraging and offering insight to these budding entrepreneurs that just completed half of their training in getting start up.

What could I offer? Getting over my own fears and insecurities.

Seriously guys I wasn’t sure it was the forum for me initially. I was basically questioning whether or not I had something to offer that was tangible to this group. As you all know my business/side hustle has always been competing with either being at work full time or the last two years of being a full time grad student. I was either the Project Manager or the student with a business. However, having completed school and not currently working full time while I explore my options, guess what remains and is a fact? I am an entrepreneur. Whether my business is where I want it to be or not does not change the fact that I am an entrepreneur. I mean for crying out loud my business name is registered. hahahah

All that is to say is that I had to get over my fears real quick and get with this event because I needed to be there and be present fully knowing that I did have something to offer. My 3.5 years of business has definitely been a learning curve and I am still learning, growing and figuring a lot out.

Amshina sweater dress: My Outfit of the day

At the end of the day

I was all pumped and feeling extremely grateful. The other panelists were amazing and the future entrepreneur women offered so much insight and reflection for me that was out of this world. I have never sat and talked about my business in such detail – sharing and reflecting on past experiences. It felt great. I felt grateful to share my challenges and successes with these creative minds and be empowered by their stories as well. The lonely road of entrepreneurship sometimes causes us to forget that there is support within the creative community once we tap into it.

End of event photo

I trust in 2019 I can do more events like this where I can share and be encouraged at the same time. I am excited and inspired about the next year of business. There are so many ideas that I am writing down since this event that starting now seems to be the best time instead of waiting until January 1st. 🙂

PS: I made this dress for the event. I used my drafted cardigan pattern and a stretch knit material to create this. It has two pockets. :). My good old boucle scarf was a hit and went well with my look!

Blessings until next time.

Trimming the Fat & Allocating time!

Hey Everybody,

It’s me again. Bringing to you an update on all things sewing over here in Uta land. I hope the month of November has been good to you and that as you continue to press in to those year end goals and plans that things materialize. These end of month salutations are becoming a thing with me eh. I figure I can save you the rabble in-between and catch you at the end of the month. I plan to do better in 2019. At least two post a month. What do you think?

Snip,Snip: Trimming the Fat

So about my caption…lol its not a weight-loss post ( that’s another story..lol). Rather it’s a self and life evaluating season that I am intentionally pursuing to gain momentum and clarity concerning my business, life and career. 🙂 A reset and recharge.

This is really all about the noise. You know, the distractions, that have a way of creeping into our day from the moment we open our eyes. Whether it’s the news, emails, messages, procrastination, social media…etc. whatever it may be for you. Trimming the fat is looking closer at the things that are not adding value to your overall purpose. This will take some time of course but November was dedicated to starting that process for me.

Allocating time: Pursuing and feeding that which is enriching your life!

This speaks for itself. We have to be intentional about how we spend our time and looking at those things that are also stealing our time? Can you identify some of the things that are stealing your time? Are there things you have been carrying from month to month hoping to get done and are still lagging? Maybe this is just me?

Now we know time is not promised to anyone and really getting things done when they need to be should be our goal and focus. What this means is that in everything we do we are to bring and be our best selves and not half hearted. So in my allocating and trimming the fat I am being more intentional than ever before today and not tomorrow.

What have I done lately?

I examined what I am feeding myself spiritually on a daily basis, what I am eating ( I have done lots more healthy cooking and eating this month), I literally cleaned out my closet and got rid of a few bags of clothing and shoes, I cleaned up my entire apartment with the help of hubby of course…lol, took almost three weeks break off instagram to refocus on my business goals and some sewing ( I know…. November was not a crazy month of sewing at all, otherwise I probably wouldn’t have done any of the above goals..lol). Here are some of the meals below!

Roasted veggies, Plantains and Bean and P-Choy Chilli

Butternut Squash Carrot Coconut Soup with Avocado

Bell Peppers and Homemade Humus!

Closet Organization!

Now I don’t want this post to be super long but I did want to pop by and give you guys and update on where I am at. Indeed the intentional focus continues as I consider where I want my business to be in 2019 and where I want my career to be. These are not overnight decisions, so time will tell.

PS: I won’t be participating in any Christmas Markets this year but I will be doing more online promotions of handmade gift ideas you can grab from Amshina as well as Holiday looks. I am working on some limited Christmas pieces. I will share a post on each category as I share them on instagram and my shop. Stay Tune! Here’s a peak!

Gift Ideas

Thanks for stopping by. What are you up to as we enter December? Are there any major things you are working on for yourself? Do share how you keep motivated in meeting your year end goals. The sewing chronicles continue.

Bless

Happy July!

Inspiration is everywhere. Creative and life changing experiences, places, people, things and such are beckoning us daily in our lives to DO and BE better human beings. Won’t you agree? I know this is sometimes hard to believe in the face of life’s most challenging experiences. I can definitely relate but let us not deny inspiration even when we don’t feel like it.

My nephew took this candid blurry shot of me last weekend….it’s giving me life! 🙂

I continue to be grateful for those individuals that come into my life weekly. Unknown to them at times are great sources of inspiration for my creative outlet and life.

Inspiration can be found in the strangest places and in the not so strange places. Inspiration can also be timely, won’t you agree. How many success stories have you read of individuals going from 0 to something or just being saved by a crazy idea in time to take them to the next level? There are many….I love those stories.

This was a few years ago on a girls trip. A memorable trip and experience! 🙂

Recently I was inspired by a new customer and a conversation with a potential customer. The new customer was eager to purchase a piece and shared how immediately they connected to the piece and had to have it. The potential customer was looking for something special that I didn’t have but I was willing to get behind their vision and explored how we can make it possible. The timing wasn’t right so we agreed on a possible future collaboration. At the end of both conversations I had a spring in my step even though both were successful in different ways. One resulted in an immediate sale and the other, a possibility for future collaboration.

These three beauties rocking three pieces from my Amshina Custom Clothing business!

I am reminded that in putting my best foot forward every time that there can be something to reap. What do I mean by reap? Sowing seeds of good customer service should not be optional when you only anticipate a final sale. Every entrepreneur should know this. At the beginning of my entrepreneurial journey it was hard to spend hours putting together a plan for a piece and creating estimates and quotes for sales that fell through ( I still do 🙂 ). It took many no’s and a few yes’s to caution me not to be discouraged in these moments. Instead, I started looking for inspiration and ideas for products as well as how I can serve my clientele better in these conversations and inquiries. I am still pruning the tree of entrepreneurial excellence but with intention and purpose now.

Just me..thinking out loud! 🙂

It’s also a beautiful reminder that inspiration can be found anywhere and in the strangest of places.

Let me put that inspiration into plans and get creative now shall we! 🙂

What’s the most strangest place, thing or experience that’s ever inspired you to date? Do Share.

Stay tuned! The creative chronicles continue! 🙂

God Bless!

It’s been 3 months: I am back!!

It’s been a minute everyone!

As always, I want to thank you for sticking around these past empty months here on my blog :). I know some of you follow me over on instagram so you would have seen some updates on there during this time. Thank you, thank you! For those close to me you are definitely aware of me completing graduate school these past few months. Yahoooo!!! 🙂 It is finished!

I can’t begin to tell you the story and journey of the past few months of grad school. It would take way too long a post. Things were crazy I tell you. Lots of reading, writing, researching, review, edits, edits, more edits and so on. However, on May 17th I successfully defended my Masters Thesis in Social Work and pass with flying colours!!!! Woot Woot!! God knows, it was something else.

At my thesis defence 🙂 May 17th 2018

It was no joke. It was by far one of the most difficult moments and times in my education journey to date. No graduation pictures to show you yet of my actual convocation, that will be in the Fall this year :).

I won’t bore you with the details of my journey and turn this into the most lengthy post you have read but I am so thankful to be finished. I am sure in between posts over the next few months I will share some of those stories. Encouragement came from near and far and I am so grateful. The past two years have not been easy but by God’s amazing grace I made it and I am still processing everything.

Sewing and my business

During this time I did do some sewing for my business and myself for sure. It didn’t take me long to realize I had to take a break as my research was calling for me to focus and really get into it during these final months. The sewing in between was handy. It was like my own therapy! SEWTHERAPY!! 🙂 I made some awesome pieces. I will share them with you over the next few months. Picking up where I left off as I get prepared for a few summer markets and business promotion of my products. Wish me well! 🙂

A dress I made 🙂

What’s next?

That’s the question on everyone’s lips I meet. To be honest I am still processing everything and deciding which direction I want to head in. No rush! In the meantime I just returned from a mini vacay with hubby from Cancun, Mexico. It was a great gift and break and I was so grateful to my family members that made it possible! THANK YOU!!!! We appreciate and love you!!

Vacation in Mexico…..A day tour to Tulum! The top I am wearing is an Amshina piece!

Anywho! It’s great to be back in blog land. Every time I am away I feel like I am starting over again. I am sure anyone can be discouraged by that, yet here I am turning a new leaf. I am down for the task and will definitely keep at it.

I trust you all will stay with me on this creative journey. I hope to dedicate more time to refining and fine tuning my creative business and sewing skills over the next year with new inspiration and goals. Research has definitely influenced me these past two years and I am excited to take my blogging to the next level.

So stay tuned as always!

The Detox: Who is down for a good challenge?

Hey Uta Sews followers! Ending February and starting March! 🙂

Planning your wardrobe intentionally! Yes!!! That’s what this detox is all about! And guess what? You don’t need any subscriptions, no weekly commitment and you can start anytime! 🙂

As you get on a role with your 2018 goals, plans, aspirations and resolutions, whatever you may call it I would like for you to consider your wardrobe and the changes you would like to make. These changes can be to continue to develop where you are at or they can be to review and revamp. Where are you on that scale?

Continue to Develop………………………………………………………………….Review & Revamp

Believe it or not your wardrobe says a lot about you and how your personality shows up every day in your various settings. Don’t get me wrong… it doesn’t define you but it does speak volumes, especially when you are not speaking literally.

How confident was I in my Maxi? Love it!!! 🙂

My dilemma

I am somewhere on that continuum. I am not quite sure as my wardrobe continues to evolve. What I can say though is that I know what is missing. I know.. If I know what is missing why don’t I just fix it? Well it’s not that easy or simple but I have decided I need to make some strides towards that. Becoming intentional.

Be intentional Uta..Be intentional.. Rocking my Amshina Pencil Skirt

I always saw myself as an intentional shopper. You know, deals are on so I choose wisely depending on my needs and not wants. This changed drastically at some point. I started going for deals and adding pieces that were either too repetitive and not functional or sometimes the wear and tear was not good :(. I mean really, how many pair of blue jeans does one really need?…lol When I say “things changes” that’s what I am referring to. So While I was getting items at good deals, the question still remained whether they met my wardrobe needs? Did they fit my sense of fashion? Did I love these pieces? You get the picture now. So here are some things I want you to do as you think wardrobe detox at the start of the year. I know its February… so hopefully it’s not too late to add something else to your list if its not there already! 🙂 Think about it though, it’s a good one. Happy wardrobe, happy life! 🙂 Okay…maybe not that dramatic. You know what I mean. :). Here it goes, three questions:

  1. What’s in your closet?: I mean, come on. You know the theory of don’t go grocery shopping on an empty stomach? Well let’s flip that, don’t go shopping with a full closet! Especially when you don’t know what’s in it. 🙂
  2. What’s your style?: Do you know your style? Your preferred pieces? You know, the ones that you live in daily, weekly? Your weekend favs? Your office go tos. For someone like myself who went through a period of dress rehearsals ( I still do at times..lol).I think I have an idea now of those pieces.
  3. What’s missing?: Are there pieces that you can think of right away that you would love to see in your closet but they are not there? Have you ever got dressed, wish you could wear something else and thought you owned that missing piece of garment but later realized you never bought it? ( That might just be me..lol .. it happened alright). You know what I mean!

Regaining momentum

So what’s my challenge since I have asked you to think of the above three questions? Well it’s simple. If you felt totally comfortable with your answers to question 1 and 2 then you are in a good place and perhaps you are continuing to develop and improve your wardrobe and style. Feel free to share your thoughts on that below. 🙂

On the other hand, if you didn’t feel too good about question 1 and 2 then it’s time to plan the review and revamp strategy for your closet. Yes!! Review and revamp. You get to do this on your own terms and in your own time. I am just here to prompt you to think and then act on it! 🙂 Question 3 goes across the board from the wardrobe confident to the wardrobe “I am still figuring it out”. There is always something missing.

I promise I was not thinking about sewing….My reflection pose 🙂

What’s next for me?

With my goal of infusing my handmade pieces into my wardrobe I have to be more intentional about what I make for myself now. So guess what…review and revamp! I will update you as those changes occur.

My Infinity scarf and memade dress! 🙂 Its a start.

Here’s what I would like you to do.

I would love to hear from you on what you thought of my little exercise! 🙂

As a bonus for individuals who are willing to drop me an email at amshinaapparel@gmail.com or Private Message me on instagram with:

  • Your top 5 summer staples
  • If you could wear one outfit all summer what would that be and why?
