Reflections: Backing up in order to move forward!

Happy New year everyone! Welcome to 2018!

It’s indeed an honour and privilege to be able to share my adventures with you. ( As much as I can) 🙂 I apologize for the mini gap between Sept to December. It was crazy. Have no fear the photos are here! 🙂

Before I start spewing out awesome content in 2018, let me just back up and fill you in on all the good makes and takes of 2018. As always I didn’t think I did that much and then the pictures reveal otherwise! 🙂 The pictures shall set you free..lol

Reflection is good. I am actually inspired to take action and grow when I reflect. Yes.. It can be overwhelming but I am an optimist and a believer. There is this quote I love and I would like to encourage you with as you reflect on the past and enter the future:

“Insight alone is not enough.

There must be action after reflection”

( Reupert, 2009)

Isn’t that beautiful? Does that quote make you want to move forward? I hope it does, because sooner or later we will realize that the past is the past and the missed opportunities of yesterday are now the realities of the new day that has the potential to bring even more opportunities! 🙂 So act after you reflect!

Okay! Thats my fill of philosophy for you today. On with the show and the photos.

The reality of 2017 was amazing in hindsight. I really didn’t know how much I could get done with my full time graduate program(Grad school is serious yhall..lol) and internships (10 months…oh my…) but by God’s grace I managed to take some risks and am really pleased with not just the pieces I made but the growth in my craft this year. Some of those challenges were taking on some commercial patterns! Yikes.. if you know me and my sewing long enough you will know that I mostly like to create my own patterns from favourite pieces and add my twists to them. Taking on commercial patterns on a few looks were challenging and rewarding too. We can get into that more in 2018 as I share my likes and dislikes of the commercial patterns. Nevertheless, the sewing machine was on a roll in 2017! 🙂 I actually added a new machine to the sewing family( My MIL’s old machine from the 70s). It sews like a dream and it really helped me when my old faithful had moments in the year.

Alrighty! On to the photos! There were maxi dresses, pants, tops, two pieces, off the shoulders, shift dresses, wrap skirts, maxi skirts, hoodies, tulle skirts, jumpers, wrap tops.. even little peoples clothes ( I enjoyed those two dresses 🙂 ). It was a sewing marathon and included in that were two amazing Fashion showcases! 🙂

There’s more 🙂 . These are the awesome shots from my fashion showcase that took place on November 24th! 🙂 My Holiday looks of the BB17″ Fall collection! I really enjoyed working with these amazing models and making those pieces. There was a total of 17 pieces= 9 looks! 🙂

Well, I think I captured those awesome makes of 2017. At least most of them…lol You can see the risks I took right away as well as the step up in my designs! 🙂

Stay tuned for 2018 content. Keeping you engaged in my sewing journey but also bringing you practical tips and tricks as you navigate your wardrobe in 2018!

Thank you all so much. It’s an honour to have you on this journey.

Just keep sewing, just keep sewing..what do I do I sew, sew, sewwwwwwwww!!!!

God bless

Reflections: Showcase Review & Pictures :) :) :)

Hi Guys!

Happy New week!!!!

RAWToronto_VERSE-Ian 6548

Its a great day for a showcase throwback don’t you think. Its been just over a month that AmshinaApparel my handmade custom clothing business had the opportunity to showcase on the RAW- Natural Born Artist platform. If you have never heard of them before please feel free to check them out. It’s an amazing group that gives artist like myself a platform to showcase and share my talent with the community and progress in my branding. The event was well curated and organised by the local staff and was really well done.  This was my first collection adventure. As you can imagine even though I had a few months to plan it was still quite challenging trying to curate pieces and sew them at the same time, not to mention the model search and fittings that followed this process. Nevertheless, I must say I had some amazing volunteers and friends that came alongside me to offer guidance, support and tangible contributions to making this opportunity a reality. I was and continue to be very grateful to each and every individual from my family and friends near and far.

A special special shout out to my Husband, his cousins and friend that took the time out to record and mix the song. Your support was priceless. Thank you!!! 🙂 🙂

The pieces

Originally I had planned twelve (12) pieces, but a few weeks before showcase one of my models cancelled due to some unforeseen circumstances so I had to make some adjustments. This was okay since I was being overly ambitious in a good way. 🙂 Still love her. She will be in show no. 2 🙂 hahahhah got that ma….lol.

Okay , so on to the eleven (11) pieces that graced the runway in the below order. I also strategically created three sections for my overall presentation. Check out the group shots below too:

Inspiration

Inspiration came from many pieces and places, but I was also inspired by the styles of my models too. Showcasing my pieces were key but also having my models feel comfortable in their looks was paramount. 🙂

The goal was to showcase my love for print but also the Fit, Function, Fashion and Fun that my pieces offers its wearers. Versatility and style in one look :). My pieces are also geared at different shapes and sizes as you can see in my use of models!:) 🙂 🙂

Thank you guys for being patient with my mini review here. You may have seen some on my instagram but its way overdue for a post here. This one definitely is a milestone and learning moment in my sewing journey and I look forward to the next stage! 🙂

Thanks for your continued support. Stay tuned! The sewing chronicles is definitely continuing. Hope you are all having a great summer! 🙂 🙂

Just keep sewing, just keep sewing, what do I do I sew, sew sewwwwwww!! 🙂

St Patricks Flow: A project abroad!

Hi Folks,

March has been a breeze right! But I have some good posts lined up for you so you can see what I have been up to these past weeks. Lets start off with my sewing chronicles abroad!. Yes, you heard right ABROAD!!

This outfit was birthed while on vacation. …. I know I know.. who does that?… I guess I do. 🙂 What you love have a tendency of following you around. I guess cause really it is apart of you right…:) hmmmm
image

So the story of this outfit came about a week ago while vacationing on the beautiful island of Montserrat in the Caribbean sea. All I really needed was a sewing machine which my Cousin’s wife just so happen to have :). My fellow sewer!

Doing some initial alterations the first day of sewing 🙂

My Aunty was in need of her St Patricks day outfit and had some fabric waiting to be manipulated by yours truly. In no time I got measurements and was self drafting this baby away! Little tools available but I had a vision that needed to become a reality!

Assembling the bodice with the zipper in back

The final product worn on St Patrick’s day! She looked fabulous. I think this just earned itself a spot in the Amshina book of prized projects! 🙂

Trust you all had a great St Patricks day!

The chronicles of sewing continues… Just keep sewing, just keep sewing.. what do I do I sew, sew…

Until then..

Handmade in a Hurry: My Creative Power break!!

Happy March!

It really takes time to make that perfected custom piece. At least for me it does as I am a bit of a perfectionist. I am still learning so very much in my sewing journey it’s unbelievable  how many things I have attempted in the past two years from when I started almost 7 years ago. Every project is a learning experience. I kid you not.

And as you all can see from my shared projects I do take some risks here and there. 🙂 I guess my vision continues to supersede my natural abilities which in the end brings me to the finished product! 🙂

So back to my subject and the message in this quick post. While I do take my time to make a special order it seems my wardrobe is evolving fast in between projects. hahah…What do I mean by that?  I have discovered over the last bit  with the right thread in the machine and some fabric handy I am willing to take that 15 -25 minutes to make a quick skirt or dress just for myself. Oh yeah! handmade in a hurry. I amaze me. 🙂 I do serge and all too. It’s not sloppy work at all, in my opinion there is just a rush of adrenaline on these 20 mins project that I have to stop and wonder at times why others take more time. But then I realize it’s the perfection streak in me that causes me to slow down and take my time on the special pieces as I want my very best to be put forth. Also that 15-20 mins project break is in fact a power nap in the grant scheme of things. Only problem is I am not closing my eyes but I am shifting from one project to the next to keep the momentum going and coming back refreshed. I can truly say it does refreshes me. See my two latest Creative Power Break  outcomes below! 🙂

It is my goal this year to incorporate more of my own pieces in my wardrobe so at least I have started right. I should give my self credit for the quick pieces now,  I doubt my first blazer will take me 20 mins.hahahaha

For my sewing enthusiasts that sew for others occasionally or on a regular basis I would love to know if you spend as much time on your own pieces versus a custom piece? Also Do you take Creative Power Breaks?

I am curious to know. 🙂

Hope you enjoyed this quick snippet!

Just keep sewing, just keep sewing.. what do I do I sew sew….

Until next time
